Thank you to the publishers for this review copy. I had allowed this to slide down my pile because everyone was raving about it… I know odd perhaps but sometimes the hype puts me off. However, I am now pleased to report that this is a highly accomplished debut and there is no doubt that whatever Alice writes next I will absolutely need to read ASAP. It has also been selected, just this week, by Watestones to their shortlist for the best fiction debut of 2023. So I do hope many more people will read and fall in love with it.
Without giving spoilers… This novel sees young men, children even perhaps, leaving school and being sent to war. It will in places break your heart over and over again. However, it will also on occasion fill your heart with joy. But ultimately at the end I think you will agree that this is a fabulous novel which will no doubt be recommended for years to come.
