Loved the idea of reading about a person described by so many. After all I think we can be a very different person depending on who we are with. Do you show different characteristics with your partner, family, friends and work colleagues? How complex a character would you make if someone were to write about you? Loved it!

I can’t say I liked this book but I’m not sure why. It is very well written and it reminds me of a documentary. The book is about Sophie and her films told from the perspective of her friends, colleagues, and family. However most of the narrators are unlikable, flawed characters, who all appear to use Sophie as much as she appears to use them to make her films. At the end I didn’t quite trust the impression I had of Sophie. Was it true or was it a product of the dysfunctional people she attracted and was attracted to? I wasn’t quite sure if I disliked her or felt sorry for her. The only character I liked was the film critic, who had only met Sophie briefly. His parts were an amusing interlude between the different narrators. I think I need something more than a film critic to empathise with or care about in order to like a book.
