This is a great series, one where the next book really has no option but to appear in my house and go straight to the top of the pile to read.
However, I would absolutely advise you to read in order for best results, this is book 3.
Previous 2 books are resurrection bay, and fire came down.
PI Caleb Zelic is a fantastic character!
Definitely recommend all 3!
