This year the women’s prize announced an additional prize, for the first year ever they were hosting a non fiction prize.
I don’t read very much non fiction but I vowed that I would read at least the winner. (Additionally, I also read Code Dependent by Madhumita Murgia – which I recommend).
Doppelganger by Naomi Klein is the winner for 2024!
I hope to continue to use this as a prompt to increase my non fiction reading by at least their winner each year but hopefully more from their longlists too.

So, Doppelganger; this had been on my radar since the hardback was published, when I first saw the cover of the hardback I had mistakenly thought it was fiction.
When I started reading this after the winning ceremony it is fair to say it had my head in a spin. I wasn’t sure what I expected from the book and it appeared to be taking my head in a variety of directions. This book covers a variety of conspiracy theories, social media etc but there were also many points within the book from further back in history – not all were known by me before reading. For me this was definitely a read outside my comfort zone, but it is perhaps an important read given the rise of conspiracies, fake news etc on social media especially since the start of the covid pandemic.

This book just might make you think twice about what you read online and your use of social media sites.
